It didn’t come easy, but with a 47-44 win at Kirtland on Tuesday Berkshire’s boys’ basketball team completed a sweep of Chagrin Valley Conference Valley Division opponents for the third straight season.
Senior Kyle Blair led Berkshire with 14 points, with seven coming in the game’s final eight minutes of play. "I looked at (teammate Tim) Goff and told him we were captains, it is the fourth quarter and it was time to bring it, and I was able to bring it," Blair told the News Herald. “Coming into this game, we were 23-0 the last three years in CVC Valley games, and we wanted to come in here to a tough environment and send the seniors out by continuing to win conference games." Goff added 13 points and a game-high 18 rebounds and senior Travis Smetana added 11 points for the Badgers. The Badgers (11-6 overall and 10-3 in CVC games, which includes crossover games against the Metro Division) led at the half, 24-21. Kirtland clawed and scratched its way back in the third period to tie the score at 29, but the Badgers managed to hit their free throws and close out their fifth straight victory. The Badgers converted on 16-of-25 free throw attempts and shot 33-percent from the floor. Kirtland was 14-for-26 from the free throw line and shot just 28-percent from the floor. Berkshire returns to action on Saturday when the Badgers host Chardon at 6:00 and 7:30 p.m. |
